How
to Roxor Your Loser Friends With 1337 Skillz
By
Lucas Walker
For
all of you curious to how I make this symbol as seen in some of
my posts: ¿ used in the following smily faces ô¿ô
º¿º ò¿ò +¿+ *¿*
and the like it is making use of the alt keys. Basically you make
sure the num lock light on your keyboard is lit up (if it isn't
push the numlock key right below the light and above the 7 on most
keyboards) now hold down alt and type 168 (you must do this on the
keypad; the numbers not above the letters but to the right of the
enter key) then release alt. It'll output this ¿ now u have
the nose. Try out different combinations. The ones I use are ò
(149) º (167) and ô (147). As far as the cool ™
and © symbols they also use the alt key idea. hold alt and
hit 0153 for ™ and alt 0169 for © note: between symbols
you release the alt key so to get ô¿ô you'd do
hold alt 147 release alt hold alt 168 release alt hold alt 147 release
alt.
Yes thats right
there are things that can be done with a computer that are even
more fun than making cool ô¿ô faces. Whenever
you start up your computer you see a black screen that says loading
windows. Then a moment later you'll see a screen with clouds in
the background that says Windows NT, 95, 98, 2000 or whatever version
you are running and a blue bar that moves along the bottom of the
screen changing gradually from blue to white. Anyways there is a
secret way to change this image to whatever you want. It appears
that windows (note: I dislike windows simply because they have a
monopoly and they're operating system isn't half as good as unix)
has decided that it is their right to have their emblem appear durring
boot up so they have hidden this file kinda secret like in an attempt
to thwart us. But we won't let that stop us now will we? Here is
how you change your startup screen. Note: I am NOT talking about
the desktop with all the icons behind it (thats way so easy to do
it'd be a waste of my posting an article to explain how to do that).
The screen I am talking about comes BEFORE the password prompt.
I have succesfully done this with windows 95 and it supposedly works
on win 98 just as well but don't come crying to me if it won't work
on your 98's (which it should if you are doing everything right).
NOTE: There is no risk in doing what I am about to say, unless you
put "Bill Gates Blows Goat" on there and your mother yells
at you because it isn't appopriate. As far as your computer's safety
goes...This is just as safe as playing a game of solitaire. If anyone's
computers crash and you were following my directions you may punch
me in the nose and force me to fix your computer free of charge.
Here is how
it works: (Note: I will use the - between items you have to click
on as a division between steps) You click on Start - Find - Files
or Folders. Once you have find started you may need to set it up
so that windows shows all files (some files are hidden from users
so that stupid people like myself can't find and mutilate em, Windows
hid the startup screen picture among these to attempt to make us
leave it as it was.) On my computer I didn't have to change any
settings. I just made sure that the "look in box" had
the letter C:\ in it (you can pulldown and select it if it isn't
there already) for the named section type in logo.sys this is the
startup file (the one with clouds). Click on include subfolders
then click Find Now. Wait till the search is complete (it should
come back with logo.sys found in file C:\Windows) now if you don't
get any return then you haven't enabled hidden files to be viewed
on your computer (which I will abbreviate as cpu from now on). I
can't remember exactly how to enable this but it should be easy
to find and/or already enabled. I installed a compiler some time
ago so mine automatically shows hidden files. Another option for
finding this file is using Windows Explorer and looking manually
through C:\Windows for the file (they're in alphabetical order,
and there is a pulldown menu often that allows a "show-all
preference" so you can see all the files including logo.sys)
Ok...anyways back at the task at hand. Double click on logo.sys
in the box and a screen will pop up asking you what to open this
file with. Make sure that the "Always use this program to open
this file type" box is NOT!!!!! check marked. Then scroll down
the list of alphabetical programs and choose MSPAINT. Click ok and
wait for paint to load up the file. You should see your familiar
startup screen with clouds and all. Now you know the file name that
windows saves their startup screen secretly in. Now click on File-New
in Paint. If it asks you if you want to save changes click no (any
edits you made to it were accidental). Once you have a blank screen
up click "Image," then click "attributes." Set
width 320 and height to 400. Make sure under Units that Pels is
selected. This is the exact same size as the Windows startup screen's
image. Now slop down whatever you want in this file. I personally
have "Welcome to Windoze---The Official Computer of Lazy people
everywhere." written in bright neon green on a red and black
background. Anyways have fun and when you are satisfied with the
fact that your picture is THE COOLEST THING EVER. Save the file
as C:/logo.sys A prompt may pop up and ask "Replace existing
file?" Choose yes. Now restart your computer and be amazed
by your new background. For the shutdown screen (It is now safe
to turn off your cpu) the file is logos.sys Now lets just say you
change the startup to something like Bill Gates Blows Goat. Well
when your mother boots up your computer she says "Lucas you
fix that right now". So here is how you undo all of your 3
minutes of "hard" work. Click on Start-Find-Files or Folders.
Then type in logo.sys or logos.sys accordingly. And once again make
sure that the search path is "C:\" just like before. Now
when your file pops up you can right click on it and select delete
and tell your cpu its ok to send it to the recycle bin. Or to hide
it for later to re-add when you're mad at your mom rename it to
something inconspicuous like file.sys by right clicking on it and
chosing rename from the pulldown menu. (I'm not sure if this name
is taken on your cpu or not but just choose something nonchallant
that no one will check in which isn't taken). If this file name
is taken choose another that you can find later. Save your file
in a folder you can find it later. Now whenever you want to "unleash
the vengance of your wrath" upon your mother again just rename
file.sys right back to logo.sys as you had before. And wala you
once again have your cool startup screen. This renaming/deleting
trick works because windows set up something in their configuration
files just for people like us who change our startup or shutdown
screens and want to "come crawling back to windows for repentance".
This has taken
much longer to say than it takes to do but I hope you get the idea.
Just ask any releveant questions on the board and I'll help you
out. If you want my startup screen I have given it to Frogman so
you can dowload it (It's nothing to marvel at really). I hope you
all feel 31337 (elite mispelled eleet in "cool hacker jargon")
and can impress a girl/guy with your amazing computer skillz (more
jargon).
